Street Art and Street Lit
WHY do we sympathize with street artist Shepard Fairey?
Maybe because NEW POP LIT (like its predecessor, the Underground Literary Alliance), was founded by street writers. NPL's current editor has existed by choice OUTSIDE the well-regulated world of letters as long as he's been writing. Via street pamphlets, newsletters, zines, and ebooks. New ideas in any art come first from beneath or outside institutional offices. Innovators don't do business-as-usual. They break the rules.
Right now, Detroit NEEDS its street art-- which adds color and beauty to an ocean of decay and ruin.
